This Sunday’s Hebrew Bible readings can’t be summed up in a single verse. But both have to do with… Social justice.

In tr Kings text, King Ahab wants Naboth’s property, so with Jezebel’s help has him frame and stoned. God sends the prophet Elijah to pronounce judgment on him.

In the optional Samuel text God sends the prophet Nathan to King Davd to pronounce judgment on him after David arranges Uriah’s death to cover up his affair with Uriah’s wife Bathsheba.

In both cases, powerful leaders used their influence to rob others, and subsequently arranged murder to cover it up.

Depriving people of justice is a form of idolatry: worshipping other gods (money, sex, power) over and above the one God. In prophetic literature, loving God = doing justice.
