From “On the Psychology of the Unconsciousness,” 1917. Carl Jung, son of a Lutheran pastor, will be 136 on July 31.

Jung noticed that every culture told stories that had similar themes, plots and characters. Princes slaying dragons, for example. He called these themes “archetypes,” part of a collective human unconscious.

Other Jung quotes:

“Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.”

“Nothing has more influence on a child than the unlived life of the parent.”
