I just visited with a family that lost everything, at VP Evan’s house. They just walked through the ashes. Not much left but metal and a few burned out appliances. They’re also looking at the number of trees that burned and trying to imagine if they could ever live there again. The air is toxic now, but even later, who wants to live in a vast forest of dead, black trees?

Insurance covers housing, for a while, for those who have it. But there are not enough motel rooms or rental houses for the number of people that need them, so even short term housing is an issue. Short term recovery will be about getting everybody in a somewhat stable living situation this week. Long-term recovery will be about rebuilding houses and deciding where to do so.
