I just passed a church in the burn area that survived the fire. Their marquis boldly proclaims “God is our protector and defender.” I’m sure that’s exactly how it feels to them, but I can’t help but wonder how that feels to the church down the road couple of miles that burned to the ground, or for the 1500 families whose homes burned in the fire. Is God not also their defender? Might humility and compassion not call for a better timed or less vitriolic expression of their understandable relief?
