Rob Bell is leaving Mars Hill, which he founded in 1999. Bell was chosen as one of TIME’s 100 most influential people this year. He is riding the wave from his last book, which provides an opportunity to reach an even greater audience now. Rick Warren has already been critical. I won’t be. The apostle Paul chose to take it on the road too.
As a bishop, my curiosity runs more toward Mars Hill, and succession. How does a place like Mars Hill find a successor for such a unique individual? A church with over 8,000 in worship each Sunday is not an easy entity to head. Succession in the mega-church is a conundrum. I’ll keep them in prayer, and watch with interest to see how they will navigate this important juncture.
