Hermanos y hermanas en Cristo; Gracia y Paz sean con ustedes de quien nos creó, nos redimió y nos está santificando. Amén.

Cuando era niño, hubo un anuncio en la televisión que tenía un indio nativo americano con su ropa tribal, parado al lado de la carretera en el campo. Pasó un automóvil y arrojó una bolsa de basura a sus pies que se derramó por todo el lugar, y se podía ver cómo las lágrimas caían de sus ojos. Esa imagen me mostró el lado oscuro de la humanidad. Lo que Dios creó era hermoso y, como dijo Pablo en su carta a la iglesia en Colosos, “… todas las cosas fueron creadas por medio de él, para él”. El libro de Génesis nos ofrece la historia asombrosa de la imaginación y belleza que Dios usó para crear la tierra y el cielo. Después de que Dios creó cada parte del ambiente, Dios decía que era bueno. Entonces, Dios le dio a la humanidad el privilegio y la responsabilidad de cuidar de su creación.

Aunque la humanidad ha roto todos los pactos y mandamientos que Dios había hecho con humanidad, sin embargo Dios nos ha mostrado amor en establecer un nuevo pacto que es eterno, irrompible. Este pacto es el regalo de Dios de Jesucristo y su sacrificio por nuestros pecados; Su muerte, por nuestra vida. Este regalo es vida.

En el Evangelio de Juan, él revela que toda la creación vino de Dios el Padre a través del Hijo de Dios que era y es el Verbo. El Verbo, Jesucristo, nos hace libres. Jesús dijo que la palabra es la verdad y la verdad nos hará libres. Jesús es la verdad, El Verbo, la vida. Jesús también dijo que <<Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida.>> La vida que está en Cristo Jesús es la luz para toda la humanidad. Esa luz brilla en la oscuridad y la oscuridad no puede extinguirla.

Hay una gran oscuridad dentro de cada uno de nosotros, pero debido a lo que Dios ha hecho a través de Jesús, la oscuridad nunca podrá extinguir la luz en nosotros. La luz en nosotros es vida, es Jesús mismo. Esta luz nos llama a recordar que la creación de Dios que incluye el medio ambiente. Estamos llamados a ser buenos mayordomos del medio ambiente. Estamos instruidos para cuidar y proteger lo que Dios ha creado.

Nos podemos decir <<¿qué puede hacer una persona?>> Sin embargo, una persona puede hacer más de lo que pensamos. Podemos creer que nuestra pequeña luz es insignificante. Sin embargo, nuestra luzatada a otra luz, es dos veces más brillante que uno solo, y así sucesivamente. Múltiples luces juntas que se preocupan por la creación pueden hacer y continuarán haciendo una diferencia positiva. A veces hemos ocultado nuestras luces o las hemos apagar. Sin embargo, Jesús promete que la oscuridad en nosotros no extinguirá Su luz.

¿Cómo Dios administra a su creación? En el libro de Génesis leemos: <<Y creó Dios a la humanidad a su propia imagen, a imagen de Dios los creó; hombre y mujer los creó. 28 Dios los bendijo y les dijo: <<Sean fecundos y aumente su número; llena la tierra y someta. Domina a los peces en el mar y los pájaros en el cielo y sobre cada criatura viviente que se mueve en el suelo.>> Debemos llenar la tierra con generaciones de descendientes y someter a la tierra. Someter, significa traer la tierra bajo cultivo. Entonces debe haber un equilibrio entre cultivar la tierra y sus recursos, y someter para que la próxima generación también pueda disfrutar y vivir de la tierra. Nos encontramos con problemas, cuando algunos sobre cultivan demasiados y no siembran de nuevo. Esto no es buena mayordomía. También estamos llamados a gobernar sobre lo que está bajo el agua y también sobre el agua. Gobernar es tomar decisiones y usar el poder que Dios nos ha dado para cuidar lo que Dios ha creado. Cuidar la creación de Dios aprendemos a través de su santa palabra. Esta educación es vital para nuestro cuidado del medio ambiente. Que aprendamos a trabajar juntos para ser buenos mayordomos de los recursos que tenemos en este planeta. El versículo 30 del Salmo 104 nos dice que cuando Dios envía el Espíritu, la humanidad y todos los habitantes de la tierra son renovados.

¿Por qué soy un gran promotor de la educación para cuestiones ambientales? Porque he sido testigo de un par de desafíos que podrían haberse evitado si las personas hubieran visto la situación desde una perspectiva diferente. El primer evento fue cuando estaba en la universidad y estudiando a los indios mayas en la península baja de Yucatán. A lo largo de este río aprendieron lavar sus cuerpos y usar el baño río abajo de su aldea, y recolectar agua para tomar y cocinar desde arriba de su pueblo en el río. El problema que no entendieron era que había otra comunidad arriba de su aldea de la cual no sabían nada, haciendo lo mismo. Entonces tenían muchas enfermedades y parásitos por el agua contaminada.

Después fui a una aldea en África Central que cortaba los árboles para cultivar orugas de ellos y venderlos en el mercado. Estas orugas eran un manjar y ayudaron a comprar otros bienes necesarios para sobrevivir, como leche, verduras, carne y ropa. Así que al principio tenía sentido que cortaran estos árboles para obtener este recurso. Sin embargo, la gente comenzó a darse cuenta de que las orugas estaban desapareciendo, y que sus recursos para comprar otras cosas desaparecían. Los árboles particulares de los que las orugas vivían habían sido cortados demasiados. La gente necesitaba comer y este era un recurso útil, pero el pueblo le faltaba la educación adecuada sobre los árboles y su medio ambiente. Si se les hubiera otorgado alguna educación sobre el medio ambiente, la conservación y la replantación, habría permitido que esta aldea se prospere. Además, todos se alejaron, dejando atrás sus cabañas de hierba.

La palabra de Dios nos ayuda aprender cómo ser buenos mayordomos de todos los dones que Dios proporciona para nuestro bien, el medio ambiente y su protección es uno de ellos. La palabra de Dios es Cristo Jesús mismo y Él es la luz y la vida de la humanidad. Permítanos aprovechar de la oportunidad de enseñarles a otros estas verdades que pueden liberarnos. Jesús nos promete que el Espíritu Santo nos guíe, nos aconseje y nos enseñe que podemos tener vida y tenerla abundantemente. Recordemos que a medida que celebramos el ambiente que tenemos, es el de Dios para regalar a la próxima generación. Amén.

Brothers and sisters in Christ; Grace and Peace be upon you from the one who created us, redeemed us, and is sanctifying us. Amen.

When I grew up I remember a commercial on television that had a Native American Indian in his tribal clothes, standing on the side of the road in the countryside. A car drove by and threw a bag of trash at his feet and it spilled all over the place, and you could see tears fall from his eyes. That image reminded me of the dark side of humanity. What God created was beautiful and as Paul said in his letter to the church in Colossi, “…all things were created through Him, for Him.” The book of Genesis gives us the amazing story of God’s imagination and beauty that he used to create earth and heaven. After God created each part of the environment, God would say, it is good. Then, God gave humanity the privilege and responsibility to care for His creation.

Although humanity has broken every covenant and commandment God has asked of humanity, God has shown love toward us by establishing a new covenant that is everlasting, unbreakable. This covenant is God’s gift of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for our sins; His death, for our life. This gift is life. In John’s Gospel he reveals that all of creation came into being from God the Father through God’s Son who was and is the Word. The word, Jesus Christ, sets us free. Jesus said the word is the truth and the truth shall set us free. Jesus is the truth, the word, the life. Jesus also said I am the way, the truth and the life. This life that is in Christ Jesus is the light of all humankind. That light shines in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome it.

There is a great darkness in each of us, but because of what God has done through Jesus, the darkness will never, ever, be able to overcome the light in us. The light in us is life, it is Jesus Christ himself. This light calls us to remember God’s creation which includes the environment. We are called to be good stewards of the environment. We are instructed to care for and protect what God has created.

We may say to ourselves that we are just one person, what can one person do? However, one person can do more than we think. We may believe our little light is insignificant. However, joined to another light, it is twice as bright as one by itself, and so on. Multiple lights gathered together caring for creation makes and will continue to make a positive difference. At times we have hidden our lights, dimmed them or flat out have tried to blow them out. However, Jesus promises the darkness in us will not overcome (His) the light.

How does God manage His creation? In the book of Genesis we read, “ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” We are to fill the earth with generations of descendants and subdue the earth. To subdue, means to bring the land under cultivation. So there must be a balance between cultivating the earth and its resources, and replanting so that the next generation can enjoy and live off the land too. We run into problems, when some over cultivate and don’t replenish the earth of its resources. This is not being a good steward. We are also called to rule over that, which is under the water as well as above the water. To rule over, is to make decisions, and use the power given to us by God, to care for that which God created. All this we learn through being educated on how to care for God’s creation through his holy word. This education is vital to our care for the environment. May we learn to work together to be good stewards of the resources we have on this planet. Verse 30 of Psalm 104 reminds us that when God sends the Spirit, humanity and all of earth’s habitants upon the ground are renewed.

Why am I a big promoter of education for environmental issues? Because I have seen firsthand a couple of challenges that could have been averted if people might have seen their situation from a different perspective. The first event was when I was in college and studying the Mayan Indians in the lower Yucatan Peninsula. Along this river they had learned to wash their bodies and use the restroom down river from their village, and gather water for drinking and cooking from up above their village on the river. The problem they didn’t understand is that there was another community of people up river from them that they didn’t know anything about, doing the same thing. So they had a lot of illness and parasites from contaminated water.

Then I saw firsthand a village in Central Africa cutting down their trees to cultivate caterpillars from them, to sell, at the market. These caterpillars were a delicacy and helped to buy other goods needed to survive, like milk, vegetables, meat, and clothes. So at first it made sense that they would cut down these trees to get this resource. However, people began to realize the caterpillars were disappearing, and their resources to buy other things were going away. It was because the particular trees that the caterpillars lived off of had been cut down. The people needed to eat and this was a handy resource, but a little education about cutting down the trees and how that would create challenge was not part of their understanding. Had some education about the environment and conservation and replanting been bestowed upon them, it would have enabled this village to thrive. Instead it declined till everyone moved away, leaving behind their grass huts.

God’s word can help us to learn how to be good stewards of all of God’s gifts to us, the environment and its protection being one of them. God’s word is Christ Jesus himself and He is indeed the light and life of humanity. Let us take the opportunity to teach others these truths that can set us free. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to guide us, counsel us, and teach us that we may have life and have it abundantly. May we remember that as we celebrate the environment which we possess, that it is God’s to pass on to the next generation. Amen.
