Today, February 6, was the tribute to George Floyd at Yates high school in Houston Third Ward. I was invited to be a part due to the kindness of Carl Davis, and the support of the Synod Staff. Mayor Turner spoke, and present were State Senators Boris Miles and Royce West. Floyd’s football team showed up again, as they often have over this last year. in his honor of the BLM mural was unveiled. I had the privilege of sitting with George Floyd’s family, still heavy with grief. They also asked me to pray.
There was a sadness and also a hopefulness in the air. When I am feeling hopeless about the injustices of the world, I look at the cross, where hangs an innocent man who was executed by the Roman authorities. In the cross God stands forever with the victims of injustice.
