January 16, 2023 was the 45th original MLK Day Parade this year. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929.

Saturday night, at the Black Heritage Society Gala, I had the privilege of sitting with Dr. King‘s nephew, the Rev. Jesse King. He gave a stirring speech. As I watched him, I couldn’t help but wonder if this is what Dr. Martin Luther King would’ve looked like had he lived to this age.

It was a beautiful day as we lined up for the parade. Last year it was 34° when we started. Today it was in the 60s, and it climbed up to 73° by the end of the parade.

Hunting for our group, I ran across my friend, Carl Davis!

We got to walk behind the good H-E-B folks.

Once the parade got rolling, we discovered a happy celebrative crowd as usual.

I had a lot of fun giving out Mardi Gras beads to the kids.

And Pastor David Hansen got to rub shoulders with Mayor Sylvester Turner.

This post would be incomplete without a full panel of Chris Markert selfies…

A great day! It was fun hanging out with folks from some of our congregations and thousands of our Houston friends.
