Today I am pleased to be with Pastor Cheryl Lamaak and the good people of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waller, Texas for their 110th anniversary and the dedication of their fellowship hall. Fun fact: Exactly ten years ago today, April 13, 2024 I was also at St. John’s for your 100th anniversary on Palm Sunday.

10 years ago: Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014

I was last at St. John’s in November (November 27, 2023) in Christ the King Sunday, for Pastor Cheryl’s installation.

Pastor Sandy Jones served until 2021. Pastor Scott Cigich and others served St. John during the interim. Pastor Cheryl Lamaak was called in 2023.

Today the congregation rededicated his fellowship hall and celebrated 110 years. They were founded in 1914, the same year that Babe Ruth entered the major league, Joe DiMaggio was born, the Panama Canal opened, and the US entered World War I.

The church was started by 16 charter members. They built a building in 1915 that was destroyed by the 1915 Galveston Hurricane in August. They started building again and completed it by December. In 1958, they moved to where they are now.

This newly renovated fellowship space was their first unit.
